Tahltan Bear Dog

Also know as: No Nicknames.

Group: Sporting

Origin: Canada (Ancient Times)

Today's Role: Companion Dog, Hunting

History and Facts: Now extinct in its pure form, the Tahltan Bear Dog was used by a group of native Canadians called the Tahltans to hunt bear and other big game. While the breed was recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club for many years, no Tahltan Bear Dog has been registered for more than 20 years. In 1984, the only two dogs known to exist were spayed females. However, due to cross breeding from the times of colonization to today, it is believed that strains of the Tahltan Bear Dog are carried on today in Canadian mix breeds.
