History and Facts: Originally from Friesland in the northern part of the Netherlands, this breed is not common outside of Northern Europe. It is properly named for its characteristics: "Staby" comes from the Dutch phrase "sta me bij" ("stand by me") -- and "hoon" ("dog").

Temperament / Behavior
The Stabyhoun is highly-trainable and eager-to-please, but requires consistency to learn obedience and tricks. This breed is extremely devoted and affectionate toward its family, but is wary of strangers. It interacts well with other pets.

Breed-Related Health Concerns
Hip Dysplasia. In recent years, breeding guidelines have become stricter and many former hereditary health problems have been eliminated from the breed.

Special Needs
Exercise: The Stabyhound needs daily walks, romps or play sessions. This dog enjoys games such as fetch, frisbee, and field trial work.

Grooming: No special grooming requirements.
