History and Facts: The Smaland Hound originated in Sweden during the Middle Ages, when poor farmers could only afford to raise one dog. Thus, it was important to farmers to have a good all-around hound dog like the Smaland, which hunted a variety of prey, including: elk, hare, fox, otter, squirrel and forest birds. Historians believe the breed may be descendants of the spitz.
