History and Facts: The Slovensky Kuvac is a Mountain Shepherd is similar in origin to the Kuvasz. (Kuvasz is a Hungarian for "armed guard,") This breed was nearly extinct after World War II. Dr. Antonin Hruzo implemented a successful breeding program to help reestablish the breed. The breed gained international recognition in the early 1970s and is a popular companion dog in Central Europe today.

Temperament / Behavior
With a dramatically affectionate personality, the Slovensky Kuvac tends to make a great family dog. It is a calm, powerful and courageous watchdog. The breed is a flock herder and will need an owner that understands the training necessary for an independent breed with strong guarding instincts. The breed is reputed to have an exceptional memory: Once it learns, it does not forget.

Grooming: The thick, dense coat of the Slovakian Kuvasz needs frequent grooming. This breed it not suited for a home where dog hair is unwanted.
