History and Facts: The Portuguese Podengo Grande's roots date back to 1,000 B.C. when a group of ancient hound dogs came to the Iberian Peninsula. They were developed to hunt throughout the harsh terrain in Portugal and dig their way through thick bushes to catch their prey. According to the Portuguese Podengo Club of America, the breed traveled aboard ships of Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Magellan.

The breed comes in three sizes: Grande (large), Medio (medium) and Pequeno (small). Although the AKC does not recognize varieties, in Portugal, the breed is divided into six varieties: Grande Smooth, Grande Wire, Medio Smooth, Medio Wire, Pequeno Smooth, Pequeno Wire, The wirehaired coat is medium-long, shaggy and coarse. The smooth coat is longer than most hound dogs.

Temperament / Behavior
Portuguese Podengo Grandes are a happy, intelligent and active breed. They enjoy the company of other dogs and humans of all ages. They are also very good guard dogs and barking is not uncommon when a stranger approaches the home.

Exercise: This active breed requires a lot of daily exercise including long, brisk walks or jogs.
