The Smaland Hound originated in Sweden during the Middle Ages, when poor farmers could only afford to raise one dog. Thus, it was important to farmers to have a good all-around hound dog like the Smaland, which hunted a variety of prey, including: elk, hare, fox, otter, squirrel and forest birds. Historians believe the breed may be descendants of the spitz.
The Smaland Hound has a small (short) tail that is the result of selective breeding. With the black and tan coat, the Smaland Hound somewhat resembles the Rottweiler. The breed was recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1921. Smaland Hounds are believed to be the oldest breed of scenthounds in Sweden.
