Exercise Needs

The Sicilian Hound needs plenty of exercise, and should be kept on a leash. Vigorous activity is preferred by this breed - it loves longs walks and runs.

Grooming Needs

The Sicilian Hound's short, sleek thin coat needs little grooming. In fact, this dog may need a jacket in cold weather. This breed is a low shedding one. Keep coat looking great by wiping with a damp cloth. Teeth should be brushed regularly.

Temperament

Active, adaptable, affectionate, high strung, sensitive and timid. The Sicilian Hound can be difficult to train, harsh discipline should never be used. Obedience classes are recommended.

Compatibility with Kids

Not good with small children. Good family pet. Should be supervised around strange animals. Does not do well with larger or more dominant dogs.

History

This breed is the oldest Italian breed of dog and is a descendant of the Pharaoh Hounds of ancient Egypt. These dogs were probably brought to the Mediterranean by the Phoenicians. In Italy the breed was used to hunt rabbits in mountainous areas and were often depicted on ancient coins.
