It is thought that the Harlequin Pinscher was created by crossing smaller varieties of the German Pinscher with smaller herding dogs, such as the Sheltie and the Berger de Pyrenees. Its coloring is a combination of dark spots on a mostly white coat. No registrations of the Harlequin Pinscher have been recorded since the 1930s. It is thought that the breed may be extinct in its pure form -- present today only as a contributor to other mixed breeds.
