Temperament

Obedient and easy to train, this breed is an excellent choice for active families with children. The Spanish Pointer requires high levels of exercise. These dogs should not be kept only as a pet -- they need a job to do, preferably hunting and retrieving. The Spanish Pointers can become restless and destructive if not given enough opportunity to exercise.

Compatibility with Kids

Good with children.

History

A descendant of the Old Spanish Pointer, this breed originally specialized in deer hunting. Over time, breeders developed the dog to be smaller and more agile for bird hunting. Today the Spanish Pointer is mostly used for hunting small game, such as quail and rabbits.
