The Schapendoes have a long, double coat that needs thorough brushing once or twice weekly.

Temperament

Eager to learn, good-natured, spirited, intelligent, patient, affectionate and loyal. The Schapendoe is easily trained.

History

This breed is related to the French Briard, Old English Sheepdog and Polish Lowland Sheepdog. It was used in the Netherlands in remote heath lands to guard sheep, putting its speed and agility to good use. Modern agriculture replaced the need for these dogs as herders. As a result, the breed almost became extinct after WWII.
