Working Breeds

National Assistance Dog Day is August 13, and Bil-Jac is celebrating by honoring one of our favorite charities, WAGS 4 Kids!

Based in northern Ohio, WAGS 4 Kids is dedicated to training and placing mobility service and skilled dogs to children with special needs.

WAGS raises and trains all of their service dogs and gives them free of charge to assist children with disabilities. Bil-Jac assists WAGS by donating food to the cause. At Bil-Jac, we’re honored to feed these amazing pups who enrich the lives of special needs children.

Summer Safety Tips

Keep your best friend happy and safe during the dog days of summer with these tips from Joel Silverman, Bil-Jac dog trainer and author of "What Color is Your Dog?"

Cars can reach up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit very quickly, even on a cool day, so never leave your best friend alone in the car. Better yet, leave them at home in the air conditioning when running errands.
Dogs love the wind in their hair! If riding in the bed of a truck, always make sure to put your pup in a crate.
Make sure your dog is always wearing a collar and identification, especially when out for a walk or playing in the yard.
Be aware of hot pavement when walking your dog, use doggie boots. They look like rain boots for dogs—the next time you buy Bil-Jac ask your pet store specialist about them.
If your dog is light-colored keep him out of the bright sun. Ask your veterinarian about sun block for your dog, preferably in a formula he can't lick off. Also, keep in mind that dark colored dogs are prone to overheat in the sun, so keep them hydrated and take breaks in the shade.
If you are using metal bowls in the summer, the water can get very hot, so be sure to keep the bowl in the shade. Keep in mind though, as summer goes on the sun changes directions, so what was in the shade in June may not be in August.
