Questions About Our Super Premium Dog Food
You've come to the right place for answers. Here's what most breeders and pet lovers want to know about superior quality dog food.
Q. I've never heard of Bil-Jac before. Is it new?
A. Bil-Jac has been around for more than 65 years, since 1947. Bil-Jac is known for its commitment to quality and has, for many years, been the secret of success for many breeders. Not only have Bil-Jac clients won at AKC dog shows like the Westminster Show at Madison Square Garden, but television and movie-star dogs eat Bil-Jac. Their handlers know nothing feeds as well as Bil-Jac or gives such a beautiful coat and healthy appearance.
Q. How is Bil-Jac MEATing the nutritional needs of your dog?
A. Bil-Jac only uses real chicken, not grains as a source of protein. We never use grain gluten meals or grain protein concentrates as a source of protein in our formulas. When you see gluten meals or protein concentrates listed on other competing brands’ labels, the purpose is to boost declared protein, and not your dog’s nutrition.
Q. Can't I save a lot of money by feeding my pet grocery brands? Why should I buy a super premium brand like Bil-Jac?
A. You will likely feed your dog half as much food by volume with a super premium dog food like Bil-Jac. Your dog will enjoy better nutrition, superior health and may not need to visit the vet as often. Beware of the false economics of feeding your pet a "less expensive" food.
Q. My vet told me to feed my dog lamb and rice because he may have food allergies. Does Bil-Jac make a non-allergenic dog food formula?
A. True food allergies in dogs are very rare. Some products featured novel ingredients in an attempt to relieve "allergic-type" symptoms. However, you will find it isn't necessarily an ingredient that causes these sensitive or "allergic-type" reactions. How ingredients are processed can be even more important. In fact, dogs may react completely differently to the same ingredient simply based on how it is prepared. We are certain you'll find that Bil-Jac Sensitive Solutions Dog Food will help solve your dog's sensitive issues better than competitive lamb and rice formulas.
Q. My dog is overweight but doesn't like "lite" food. Will she like Bil-Jac's Reduced Fat Super Premium Dog Food any better?
A. Bil-Jac Reduced Fat is extremely palatable. Bil-Jac Reduced Fat is lower in protein and fat, but still contains fresh protein sources and the high quality and digestible real chicken that dogs love eating. This makes our Reduced Fat more nutritionally satisfying. Your dog will absolutely prefer Bil-Jac Reduced Fat over any competitive "lite" formula.
Q. Someone told me super premium foods like Bil-Jac will make my dog gain weight. Is that true?
A. When you feed a super premium dog food like Bil-Jac, your dog will receive more nutrition from less food because we use superior ingredients and avoid cheap fillers. Bil-Jac feeds differently from other superior quality dog foods; fed in proper amounts, you will notice that your dog looks better even on less food. If you limit "people food" and snacks, your dog will be fit and healthy on less food. If your dog is already overweight, try Bil-Jac Reduced Fat.
Q. I have a new puppy and have no idea what to feed him. Why should I feed him Bil-Jac?
A. Puppies have a great need for proper nutrition. The most important first step is to get them on a super premium dog food. Bil-Jac Puppy Food is the best choice because it contains the optimum nutrition from our fresh ingredients and special processes. The small kibble is easy for puppies to chew and digest. It can be mixed with water to help wean puppies away from mother's milk. The first year or so is when puppies grow to full size, and feeding them a superior quality dog food will help them reach their full and healthy potential. (What a puppy loses in his first year of growth cannot be regained in adulthood. That's why it is so important to feed Bil-Jac to your puppy.)
Q. What is the difference between grain proteins vs. carbohydrates?
A. Using grain ingredients for protein vs. using them for carbohydrates is an important Bil-Jac distinction. We never use grain gluten meals or grain protein concentrates as a source of protein in our formulas. When you see gluten meals or protein concentrates listed on other competing brands’ labels, the purpose is to boost declared protein, and not your dog’s nutrition.
We use carbohydrates to provide a strong nutritional balance and energy. In that dogs are carnivores, they need protein, yes – but they also need carbohydrates. Studies of dogs in the wild show us that when they kill to eat, they not only eat the meat, but also the partially digested grasses in the stomach as a source of carbohydrates. Therefore, there is a significant distinction in the function of gluten meals, that are added for protein, and grains, which are added to boost protein levels on the label, versus grains that are added to balance carbohydrates in the diet.
Finally, some dogs exhibit allergic reactions to carbohydrates which are insufficiently processed. This has led other manufacturers to include alternative carbohydrate sources to differentiate their products. That’s why we’re proud of the fact that many Bil-Jac customers actually report that their "allergic" pets demonstrate clear skin and healthy coats in no time after they begin feeding our carefully processed formula. See for yourself!
Q. What are "chicken by-products?"
A. We cannot speak for other manufacturers, but no one controls their ingredient sources as closely as Bil-Jac. We use only real chicken organ meat, which is naturally nutritious (see the ingredients list on our bags). Wild carnivores eat the organ meat first because their instincts tell them it is the most nutritious source of protein. It is no different for your domesticated dog. At Bil-Jac we've studied nutrition for more than 65 years, and we carefully blend our ingredients for optimal nutrition. Bil-Jac's real chicken by-products do not contain heads, feet or feathers - only nutritious chicken organ meat.
Q. What is beet pulp and why is it in super premium pet food like Bil-Jac?
A. Beet pulp is a superior source of fiber that contains no sugar. It facilitates digestion by stimulating the intestine and helps promote complete digestion. Beet pulp is more expensive than other fiber sources, but at Bil-Jac we choose only to use the best. Bil-Jac's superior quality dog food contains the proper fiber balance for optimum digestion.
Q. Why is corn meal better for my dog than rice?
A. Bil-Jac's primary concern is always the health and well being of your dog. Research shows that corn has the highest total antioxidant activity (more than double) compared to rice, wheat, or oats. Research shows corn fed to dogs produces a lower glycemic index than certain carbohydrates, including rice. According to research at Cornell University, slow cooking corn releases more nutrients and up to 900% more antioxidants. Another study at The University of Queensland has shown that corn fed to dogs produces a lower glycemic index than rice. Lastly, the finely ground corn meal is 99% digestible for dogs. We know some other companies claim rice and wheat are better for your pet. We trust the tested research and you can trust the Bil-Jac family for research-based nutrition.
