Schapendoes

Also know as: Dutch Sheepdog

Group: Herding

Origin: Holland

Today's Role: Companion Dog, Obedience Work, Search & Rescue

History and Facts: This breed is related to the French Briard, Old English Sheepdog and Polish Lowland Sheepdog. It was used in the Netherlands in remote heath lands to guard sheep, putting its speed and agility to good use. Modern agriculture replaced the need for these dogs as herders. As a result, the breed almost became extinct after WWII.

Breed-Related Health Concerns
Excellent health record. No known hereditary conditions.

Special Needs
Exercise: Schapendoes have boundless energy, need plenty of exercise, and love walks. This breed tends to stay close to owner. It makes a good watch dog because it has an innate guarding instinct. However, it is not aggressive.

Grooming: The Schapendoes have a long, double coat that needs thorough brushing once or twice weekly.
