Hungarian Greyhound

Also know as: Magyar Agar

Group: Hound

Origin: Hungary (Ancient Times)

Today's Role: Companion Dog, Hunting

History and Facts: The Hungarian Greyhound descends from Asian sighthounds brought to Europe by the Magyars in the 900s. Over time, it was crossed with local hounds from Romania and Hungary and with the English Greyhound.

Temperament / Behavior
This breed is gentle, affectionate and loyal. The Hungarian Greyhound's calm nature makes it an excellent choice for children. The Hungarian Greyhound is also independent, persistent and bold, so it requires firm obedience training. This breed gets along peacefully with most other dogs, but may need to be de-sensitized to cats and other small animals living in the house. Its natural instinct will be to chase small animals, rather than make friends with them.

Breed-Related Health Concerns
Bloat; sensitivity to drugs (including anesthetics and insecticides). It is recommended that owners find a veterinarian that is familiar with Greyhounds and / or related breeds because their sensitivity to anesthetics can make routine surgeries more complicated.

Special Needs
Exercise: The Hungarian Greyhound requires frequent exercise due to its racing and coursing nature. While not as fast as English Greyhounds, the Hungarian variety are still highly active. This breed makes a great jogging or running companion, and also appreciates field tracking activities. When indoors, the Hungarian Greyhound is very inactive (as long as he's been properly exercised), and could even be considered lazy.

Grooming: The Hungarian Greyhound may require regular brushing during the winter, when its coat grows longer. It requires a coat for protection from cold weather.
