History and Facts: The Estrela Mountain Dog is a descendant of the ancient Asiatic Mastiffs. It originated during the Middle Ages and was used as a herding dog. Although it suffered from unorthodox cross breeding with the German Shepherd, the breed is once again considered pure.

Temperament / Behavior
The Estrela Mountain Dog is a protective dog that's generally wary of strangers, but is loving and loyal to its family. The Estrela Mountain Dog is a calm, but naturally dominant breed. Its natural instinct to nurture the young makes it a good family pet.

Breed-Related Health Concerns
Hip dysplasia. Requires experienced dog owner.

Special Needs
Exercise: The Estrela Mountain Dog requires daily brisk exercise and plenty of room to roam.

Grooming: Routine brushing and combing and occasional bathing is required for your Estrela Mountain Dog.
